I left my friends house around 2:30 am with me were my friend Danny and Emma. Emma had borrowed an old blue bicycle from Ed, whose house we had been at, it had originally been given to Ed by Danny, who after I commented on what great condition it was in expressed his regret for not keeping it for himself but mentioned he had no space to keep it. Emma could barely get her leg over the seat and was bouncing side to side while trying to maintain balance. Emma told us she had to be home by three and raced ahead and out of sight. The conversation with Danny quickly became awkward and forced. We reached the end of the housing complex street and I faced Danny to say goodbye but quietly said goodnight and walked away without looking back. I started my walk alone passing my friend Anna’s house, it was thanksgiving night, all the lights were off and her father had parked the car sideways in the drive to keep people from turning around I suppose. I realized how dark it was in Princeton, the only thing lighting my way was the traffic light which was never green when it needed to be. Everything around me went from green, to yellow, to red. It was cold, when a car did drive past I dreamt up outlandish coincidences in which a familiar face would roll down their window and take me home. The anonymity instilled upon me of my new city life took hold of me as I took advantage of the empty streets to see how fast I could run, how loud I could whistle, and how advanced I could get with the melody I was scuffing out as my shoes dragged across the sidewalk. The silent applause of suburbia checked me back into reality as I could only imagine the response I would evoke if anyone was to see me. I laughed it off and turned right onto the street that passed my high school. My mind wandered until I reached the high school whose architectural magnificence had not faded one bit since I had last seen it months ago. Walking through the courtyard I reminisced of senior year and the relaxed atmosphere which only complimented the bright sun and green grass of the isolated front lawn. A sound in the distance which I at first disregarded as my mind playing with this now unnatural silence began growing louder and by the time I left the school I could hear it be turned off every few minutes or so only to be turned back on. It being thanksgiving night I took no chances and called the police and reported the fire alarm. When finished they asked for my name, the dispatcher hesitantly replied no after I asked whether it was necessary for me to give it. I hung up and kept walking with the siren blaring in the distance. As walking in my house I checked my phone for the time only to see it was in automatic emergency mode and sending my location to the police, so much for anonymity.
